South Africa: Johannesburg & Cape Town

South Africa is a country of dramatic contrasts — stunning nature, world-class food and wine, and vibrant cities, but also noticeable safety challenges that you have to respect.

Safety First

The general vibe when walking on the streets can feel quite creepy, especially in Johannesburg. Even though nothing happened to me personally, I quickly learned to move mostly by Uber. It’s the smartest and safest way to get around so you don’t stand out as a tourist. Cape Town felt a bit more relaxed in certain areas, but the same rule applied.

Highlights

  • Safari Tour: A proper African safari was one of the big reasons I came. Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat is always special.
  • Wine Tour: The Cape Winelands are beautiful and produced some excellent wines. A very enjoyable day trip.
  • Food Scene: South Africa surprised me with how good and affordable the dining is. I enjoyed many modern restaurants with great quality for reasonable prices. My absolute favorite was the fine-dining restaurant Embarc — the food and experience were so good that I went there twice.

Final Thoughts

South Africa offers an incredible variety: exciting safaris, beautiful wine regions, dramatic coastlines, and a strong food culture. It’s also one of the most convenient flight hubs in Africa, making it easy to combine with other countries on the continent.

Would I recommend South Africa? Yes — I will definitely go back. Just be smart about safety: use Uber, avoid walking in unknown areas at night, and stay alert. If you focus on the highlights (safari, Cape Town, Winelands, and good restaurants), South Africa delivers an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended with the right precautions.
