Bolivia: La Paz & Uyuni Salt Flats 2–4 July 2023
Bolivia delivered two completely different but unforgettable experiences in just a few days.
La Paz – The Highest Capital in the World
La Paz sits at around 4,000 meters above sea level, so you immediately feel the thin air and altitude. Breathing is noticeably harder at first.
I took the impressive cable car system that runs high above the city — great views! I also visited a lively local market where people wear traditional colorful clothing and did a guided city tour. La Paz has a very authentic, raw energy.
Uyuni Salt Flats – A Surreal Highlight
The absolute must-do in Bolivia is the Uyuni Salt Flats. I went by night bus (not recommended — very long and uncomfortable) and returned by plane (much better).
The salt flats are unique and otherworldly — endless white landscape with amazing reflections and surreal rock formations. Our guide even prepared lunch straight from the car in the middle of the salt lake. In July it’s winter, so dress very warm!
Final Thoughts
Bolivia is raw, adventurous, and full of contrasts. The altitude takes some getting used to, but the experiences (especially Uyuni) are world-class.
Would I recommend Bolivia? Yes — especially for Uyuni Salt Flats. It’s one of the most unique places on earth. Fly both ways if possible and take a good guided tour. A short but very memorable visit.
