Real Fabian Hess

Jamaica Nr. 131

Jamaica
Date: 13–14 May 2026
Hotel: R Hotel, Kingston

Facts & Tips:
• Safety: Felt rather uncomfortable walking outside. Not very friendly towards tourists and the vibe can feel a bit dangerous.
• SIM Card: Used Airalo eSIM — worked without problems.
• Cash or Card: Bring cash. Uber and small things are easier with it.
• How many days? 1 night was enough for me.
• Getting around: Nobody walks here. Everyone drives. Use Uber even for short distances (very available in Kingston).
• Must try: Jamaican breakfast at the hotel (much better than the Western one) and the oxtail for dinner.

I stayed one night at R Hotel in Kingston. The hotel itself was really good — excellent oxtail for dinner and a fantastic Jamaican breakfast. Skip the Western option and go local.
During the day I visited the Bob Marley Museum (his old house where he lived and recorded). That was interesting. I also went to Devon House with its restaurant complex, but it wasn’t anything special.
Kingston feels very different from the other islands. Almost no one walks on the streets, and the atmosphere is noticeably less welcoming. I was happy I only stayed one night.
On the positive side, I found a nice specialty coffee place with good design, and you can feel that people here have a strong willingness to hustle and make things happen.
