Brunei: Quiet Sultanate & Luxurious Surprise 08–10 February 2024

Brunei is one of the smallest and most peculiar countries in Southeast Asia. A wealthy, conservative Islamic sultanate with almost no tourists, it feels very different from its lively neighbors.

Impressions

The country is quiet, clean, and orderly — almost to the point where it feels a bit “weird” and surreal. There isn’t a lot aimed at tourists. I discovered one nice café during my stay, and the impressive mosque is naturally one of the main sights.

Highlight: The Empire Brunei

The standout attraction is without doubt The Empire Brunei, a massive 5-star resort and hotel. It’s luxurious, expansive, and offers a surprisingly high level of comfort and facilities. For many visitors, this hotel is the main reason to come to Brunei.

Final Thoughts

Brunei is not a typical holiday destination. It’s small, low-key, and has limited things to do, but that’s part of its charm for those who enjoy unique, off-the-beaten-path places. Three days was more than enough to experience the country’s character.

Would I recommend Brunei? Yes — if you’re a passionate country collector or already traveling in the region (easy to combine with Malaysia). It’s a quick, interesting stop with a very different atmosphere. The Empire Brunei makes the visit comfortable and worthwhile. Not somewhere I need to rush back to soon, but I’m glad I went.
