Bosnia & Herzegovina: Rugged Beauty & Warm Hospitality 16–17 August 2024

Bosnia surprised me in the best way. It feels like one giant, beautiful village — full of dramatic nature, history, and incredibly friendly people.

Road Trip Across the Country

I drove through Bosnia with my own car, entering from the Croatian border near Bihać. The drive from the northwest all the way through the countryside to Sarajevo, then south to Mostar, and finally to the Montenegro border was incredibly scenic. Endless green hills, rivers, and small traditional villages made the long drive enjoyable.

Sarajevo

The capital Sarajevo was a highlight. It has a lively, youthful energy with many nice restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. In the evenings, the streets fill with well-dressed young people enjoying the city — it felt surprisingly modern and social compared to the rural surroundings.

Mostar

Further south, I stopped in Mostar to see the world-famous Stari Most (Old Stone Bridge). The historic bridge and the old town around it are stunning — a perfect mix of Ottoman architecture and natural beauty with the river below. Definitely one of the most photogenic spots in the Balkans.

Final Thoughts

Bosnia is a traditional country with warm, welcoming people and breathtaking landscapes. Driving through it gives you a real sense of its character — rugged, authentic, and full of history. While infrastructure in some areas is still basic, the charm and hospitality more than make up for it.

Would I recommend Bosnia? Yes — I would happily come back. It’s perfect for a road trip through the Balkans. The combination of beautiful nature, historic towns like Mostar, energetic Sarajevo, and genuinely nice locals makes it special. If you enjoy authentic, off-the-beaten-path destinations with great food and scenery, Bosnia should be on your list.

A memorable and heartfelt stop in the Balkans.
