Guatemala: Volcano Adventure & City Caution Guatemala City | 22 July 2023

Guatemala City left me with mixed feelings. While the country offers incredible natural highlights, the capital feels chaotic and requires extra caution as a traveler.

Safety & City Impression

I quickly noticed that Guatemala City is not a place to walk around alone. The streets have a tense atmosphere, and I strongly recommend using a guide at all times — especially if you don’t speak Spanish. Even with some Spanish knowledge, it’s wiser to have local support.

Pacaya Volcano Tour – The Highlight

The best part of my visit was the Pacaya Volcano day trip I booked through GetYourGuide. It was an excellent experience and the main reason I came to Guatemala City.

  • The hike was moderate — challenging enough to feel like a proper adventure, but not overly difficult.
  • The whole tour took around 6 hours.
  • Seeing the active volcano up close, with its glowing lava and dramatic landscape, was impressive and worth the effort.

A Slightly Uncomfortable Return

On the way back, I asked the guide to drop me off at a bus station so I could call an Uber instead of returning all the way with the group. Waiting for the Uber took quite a long time, and as a foreigner who doesn’t speak much Spanish, the situation felt uneasy. Luckily, everything turned out fine, but it was a reminder to be careful with logistics in the city.

Final Thoughts

Guatemala City itself is more of a gateway than a destination. It’s busy, not particularly tourist-friendly, and safety should be your top priority. However, it serves as an excellent base for amazing day trips like the Pacaya Volcano hike.

Would I recommend Guatemala? Yes — especially for the volcanoes, nature, and Mayan culture. Just don’t spend too much time exploring Guatemala City on your own. Use guides, stay alert, and focus on the country’s beautiful highlights outside the capital.
