I arrived in Nassau, the capital and main gateway of the Bahamas.
The city feels quite artificial because of all the souvenir shops made only for tourists. There’s massive cruise ship traffic, so downtown gets very crowded when the ships are in. Random loud music plays everywhere at any time.
Not many people walk here — most drive. But once the shops close around 5pm and the cruise ship tourists disappear, the beaches become almost empty. I could swim with just the locals around — it felt like I had the beach mostly to myself.
Like many other Caribbean islands, American fast food chains have a very strong influence here.
