Baku, Azerbaijan: Modern Flames & Timeless Traditions 22–24 April 2024
Baku is a fascinating city where ultra-modern architecture meets centuries-old culture and the dramatic natural phenomenon of eternal flames. It’s a place that feels both futuristic and deeply rooted in its heritage.
Hotel Stay
I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Baku, which offered excellent luxury and service. For a hotel of this standard, the rate of around 300 CHF per night felt very reasonable. It was perfectly located for exploring the city.
Highlights
The city’s modern side is best represented by the iconic Heydar Aliyev Center — its flowing, wave-like architecture is truly unique and one of the most photogenic buildings I’ve seen. Definitely a must for pictures.
I also visited the famous Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain), a natural gas fire that has been burning continuously for centuries. While the flame itself is smaller than I expected, it’s still impressive to see nature’s eternal fire up close. Another interesting excursion was a tour to the mud volcanoes — a surreal landscape of bubbling gray mud that feels almost otherworldly.
Food & Atmosphere
Baku offers a great mix of traditional Azerbaijani food and modern dining. I particularly enjoyed the many traditional restaurants throughout the city, where live music is often playing (see videos below). The combination of tasty local dishes, warm hospitality, and lively atmosphere made for very enjoyable evenings.
Final Thoughts
Baku is a dynamic city with an interesting blend of old and new. The striking modern architecture, rich traditions, and unique natural sights like the eternal flame and mud volcanoes make it worth visiting. It’s not a place I need to rush back to immediately, but it’s definitely an intriguing destination.
Would I recommend Baku? Yes — especially if you’re traveling in the Caucasus region or enjoy destinations that mix modernity with strong cultural identity. Three days is enough to see the main highlights. The city is safe, the people are friendly, and there’s a nice energy. A solid and memorable stop.
