Sofia, Bulgaria: Historic Charm & Slow-Paced Capital 23–24 August 2024
Sofia was a short but pleasant stop during my Balkans road trip. As Bulgaria’s capital, it offers a nice mix of history and everyday life, though it still feels like a city in transition.
Arrival by Road
I drove from North Macedonia with my own car. The journey went through long stretches of countryside that were quite empty and not particularly scenic. It took longer than expected, but arriving in Sofia felt rewarding after the drive.
Impressions & Highlights
Sofia has some beautiful historic buildings and a charming old-town atmosphere. I did a well-organized GetYourGuide city tour, which was a great way to see the main sights efficiently.
One of the best parts was trying traditional Bulgarian restaurants — hearty, tasty local food at reasonable prices. Definitely worth seeking out.
I stayed at a comfortable hotel in the city (name unfortunately forgotten), which served as a good base for the short visit.
Final Thoughts
Sofia is clearly developing, but progress feels quite slow. It has solid historic attractions and good food, but it didn’t blow me away. It’s a convenient stop when traveling through the Balkans, especially by car.
Would I recommend Sofia? Yes, for a quick 1–2 day visit if you’re already in the region. It’s nice for the historic buildings, local cuisine, and relaxed vibe. However, I’m not in a hurry to return soon — there are more exciting destinations in the Balkans that I’d prioritize first. A good addition for a road trip, but not a standalone highlight.
