Iceland: New Year Magic & Epic Winter Nature Reykjavík & Beyond | 28 December 2024 – 01 January 2025
Iceland in winter is raw, dramatic, and unforgettable — the perfect place to ring in the New Year.
My Stay & New Year
I stayed in a mix of Airbnbs, including a charming small tiny house out in the nature area for New Year’s Eve. It was the perfect cozy base to celebrate. I bought fireworks from a local shop the day before and launched them into the Icelandic sky — a very memorable way to welcome 2025.
Tip: It was really cold! Pack proper warm layers, a good jacket, gloves, and thermal clothing.
Rental Car – Must-Do
Upon arrival at the airport, I rented the last available car (I didn’t pre-book and got lucky). Driving yourself is by far the best way to experience Iceland. You have the freedom to explore all the scenic spots at your own pace. Strong recommendation: Pre-book your rental car before you arrive!
Highlights
Iceland’s nature in winter is absolutely spectacular:
- Exploding geysers
- Stunning frozen waterfalls
- Beautiful black sand beaches
- And I was lucky enough to see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky
The fresh air, pure water, excellent food, and powerful landscapes make Iceland feel like another planet.
Final Thoughts
Even in the middle of winter, Iceland delivered an incredible experience. The combination of dramatic nature, the magic of New Year’s in a tiny house, and the Northern Lights made it very special. I only scratched the surface and will definitely return in summer to see the completely different side of the country (midnight sun, greener landscapes, etc.).
Would I recommend Iceland? Yes — 100%! Whether in winter for Northern Lights and ice or in summer for greener scenery, Iceland is one of the most beautiful countries on earth. Rent a car, dress warm, and get ready to be amazed by nature every single day.
