Namibia: Desert, Culture & Dramatic Landscapes Windhoek & Walvis Bay | 16–18 September 2023
Namibia delivered one of the most unique and contrasting experiences in Southern Africa. From modern cities with strong German influences to raw townships and dramatic desert-meets-ocean scenery.
Arrival & First Impressions
I flew into Hosea Kutako International Airport from Johannesburg. Upon landing, our tour guide picked us up and drove us through a local township. The contrast was striking — many houses looked improvised, and some didn’t even have electricity. It gave me an honest, unfiltered look at everyday life in Namibia.
German Influence
Namibia still has a noticeable German colonial history and a relatively large German-speaking community. Our guide the next day was German-Namibian, which made the experience interesting and added a different cultural perspective.
Highlight: Walvis Bay Tour
The main excursion was a full-day 4×4 group tour to Walvis Bay. This is where the desert dramatically meets the sea — an incredibly impressive sight. Sand dunes right next to the ocean, flamingos, and the vast, empty landscape make it feel like another planet. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Final Thoughts
Even in a short 3-day visit, Namibia showed its raw beauty and unique character. The mix of African, German, and desert influences creates something very special. It’s a country that rewards those willing to explore beyond the usual tourist paths.
Would I recommend Namibia? Yes — absolutely! The drive from Windhoek to Walvis Bay (or Swakopmund) is well worth it. The country feels vast, wild, and authentic. I only scratched the surface and would love to return one day for a longer trip — especially to explore the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei and Etosha National Park.
A powerful and memorable introduction to Namibia.
