Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Modern Capital & Dramatic Nature April 2023

Riyadh is a rapidly modernizing capital with a strong traditional heart. My visit during Ramadan gave me a unique perspective on Saudi culture.

Hotel Stay

I stayed at the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel, which offered excellent service and comfort in the heart of the city.

Impressions During Ramadan

Since it was Ramadan, the city was very quiet during the day — almost everything was closed or operating at reduced hours. Life really started in the evening after sunset. Riyadh is noticeably more conservative than Dubai, so dressing appropriately (covered shoulders and long pants) is recommended, although the rules are becoming more relaxed.

Highlight: Edge of the World

The absolute highlight was a guided tour to the famous Edge of the World (about 1–2 hours outside Riyadh). The dramatic cliffs and vast desert scenery are breathtaking. It’s hard to imagine that this area was once a huge ancient lake. Perfect for impressive photos and a real sense of the Saudi desert’s scale.

Final Thoughts

Riyadh is a city of contrasts — ultra-modern in some areas, deeply traditional in others. Visiting during Ramadan was special but quiet. The Edge of the World tour made the trip worthwhile.

Would I recommend Riyadh? Yes — especially if you’re interested in modern Saudi Arabia and dramatic desert landscapes. A short visit is enough to see the highlights. The country is opening up quickly, and Riyadh is becoming an increasingly interesting destination.
