Costa Rica: Nature & Sloths in San José 19–21 July 2023

Costa Rica fully delivered on its reputation as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Even in a short visit based in San José, the amount of nature and unique plants was impressive.

Highlights

My main goal for this stop was to see Costa Rica’s most famous animal: the sloth. I was successful! I spotted both three-toed and two-toed sloths. They are incredibly well camouflaged and move extremely slowly, often just hanging motionless in the trees. Watching them in their natural habitat was a very cool and peaceful experience.

The food in Costa Rica is quite mixed — a blend of local and international influences. I tried several typical dishes (see pictures below).

Impressions

The country feels very green and full of life, but it’s not heavily developed with modern infrastructure. Outside of organized tours, I didn’t see too many tourists. San José itself serves as a convenient base, but the real beauty lies in the nature surrounding the city.

Final Thoughts

Costa Rica is a classic nature destination with beautiful landscapes and unique wildlife. However, for me personally it wasn’t a standout that makes me want to rush back soon. It’s nice to experience once, especially if you’re already traveling in Central America.

Would I recommend Costa Rica? Yes — if you’re in the region and want to see sloths, rainforests, and rich biodiversity. It’s a great country for nature lovers. Three days in the San José area was enough for a good first impression, but next time I would probably focus more on the beaches or national parks if I return.

A solid and green stop in Central America.
