Croatia: Zagreb Charm & Dubrovnik Magic 14–18 August 2024

Croatia delivered a perfect mix of relaxed capital vibes and world-famous coastal beauty during my short visit.

Zagreb – The Capital

I started in Zagreb, Croatia’s charming capital. I stayed in a convenient hotel right in the city center (name unfortunately forgotten). The city feels pleasant and livable with beautiful historic buildings, green parks, and a relaxed atmosphere.

I booked a 2–3 hour GetYourGuide city tour, which was an excellent way to see all the main highlights efficiently. Zagreb has a nice balance of old European architecture and modern life, with a decent number of tourists but nothing overwhelming.

Dubrovnik – The Pearl of the Adriatic

From Zagreb I continued south (after a Bosnia detour) to the highlight of the trip: Dubrovnik. This iconic walled city is everything the photos promise and more. The historic old town is absolutely stunning and truly a once-in-a-lifetime must-see.

That said, Dubrovnik is very touristy in peak season — it can feel quite crowded and overloaded at times. Still, walking the ancient city walls, exploring the narrow marble streets, and soaking in the atmosphere is magical.

One of the best experiences was renting a jetski for a very reasonable price and riding along the dramatic coastline. Highly recommended for a fun break from walking around the old town!

Final Thoughts

Croatia impressed me with its natural beauty, rich history, and good infrastructure. Zagreb offers a more authentic, everyday Croatian feel, while Dubrovnik delivers pure wow-factor (despite the crowds). It’s easy to see why this country has become so popular.

Would I recommend Croatia? Yes — absolutely! Zagreb is great for a short city break, and Dubrovnik is a bucket-list destination. If you visit in August, expect crowds in Dubrovnik and book popular activities in advance. I would love to return one day to explore more of the coast, islands, and maybe Split.

A beautiful and memorable stop in the Balkans!
