Montenegro: Adriatic Coast & Stone-Walled Charm 19–20 August 2024
Montenegro is a small but strikingly beautiful country on the Adriatic Sea. With its dramatic coastline, crystal-clear water, and charming old stone towns, it has a very appealing Mediterranean feel.
Arrival & Route
I drove into Montenegro from the mountains of Bosnia with my own car. The transition from rugged inland terrain to the beautiful coastal road was impressive and made for a scenic drive.
Coastal Exploration
I focused on the coastal area, which is where Montenegro really shines. The highlight is the collection of picturesque little old towns built with traditional stone architecture. Wandering through these historic settlements feels like stepping back in time, with narrow streets, ancient walls, and beautiful sea views.
Hotel Stay: Nikki Beach Resort
I stayed at the Nikki Beach Resort, which looks very luxurious on paper with its beachfront location and upscale design. However, the service did not match the high price I paid. There wasn’t even a DJ at the pool, which you’d expect at a place like this during summer. Overall, it felt overpriced for the experience.
Final Thoughts
Montenegro offers beautiful coastal scenery and charming stone towns that are perfect for a relaxed summer escape. It’s a nice destination in the warm months, especially if you enjoy beach life combined with some history and scenery. That said, the infrastructure is not yet very modern in many places, and some of the luxury options (like Nikki Beach) don’t quite deliver on value.
Would I recommend Montenegro? Yes — for a short coastal break or as part of a Balkans road trip. The old towns and sea views are lovely and worth seeing. I would probably choose a different hotel or area next time to get better value. It’s a beautiful small country with a lot of potential, especially if you’re looking for something a bit more relaxed than Croatia.
