Dhaka, Bangladesh: Chaotic Energy & Raw Authenticity 25–26 October 2024

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated and energetic cities I have ever visited. A short but intense stop that offered a fascinating glimpse into one of the world’s fastest-growing megacities.

Hotel Stay

I stayed at the InterContinental Dhaka, the most luxurious hotel in the city. It provided a beautiful and comfortable oasis amid the surrounding chaos — excellent service, good food, and a welcome retreat after exploring outside.

Arrival & First Impressions

Immigration upon arrival was quite an adventure. I had to run around the airport to find a printing shop to print out my documents before they would let me in. It’s surprising that printed papers are still required in 2024!

Dhaka is incredibly crowded and chaotic. The sheer number of people everywhere is overwhelming at first, but it also makes it incredibly interesting to observe daily life on the streets. The city clearly needs much more infrastructure development, but the raw human energy is undeniable.

Private Guided Tour

In a city like Dhaka, I highly recommend arranging a private guide for airport pickup, daily tours, and airport drop-off. It made the entire experience much smoother, safer, and more enjoyable. My guide showed me the real side of the city and helped me navigate the chaos comfortably.

Food & Daily Life

Fancy dining options are still limited. My guide took me to what he considered one of the better restaurants, but it didn’t quite meet higher standards. Still, it was an authentic experience and I was happy to have a proper meal.

The most memorable part was simply watching the incredible street life — the hustle, the colors, and the resilience of the people living in such a dense environment. Taking photos and videos here is captivating.

Final Thoughts

Dhaka is not a classic tourist destination. It’s raw, chaotic, and challenging, but also deeply fascinating for travelers who want to experience real, unfiltered urban Asia. The contrast between the luxury of the InterContinental and the vibrant streets outside is striking.

Would I recommend Dhaka? For most leisure travelers — probably not. However, if you’re an adventurous country collector or interested in megacities and South Asian culture, a short 1–2 day stop can be very rewarding. Stay at a good hotel like the InterContinental, use a private guide, and keep realistic expectations. I probably won’t return soon, but I’m glad I experienced it.
