Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: Raw Energy & Cultural Surprises 8–9 December 2024

Addis Ababa is not the most polished or tourist-friendly city I’ve visited, but it’s undeniably fascinating and offers a very authentic look into Ethiopian life.

Impressions

The city has a raw, bustling energy. While I never felt unsafe, it’s clear that economic struggles are visible, and the atmosphere can feel intense at times. I strongly recommend exploring with a guide rather than walking alone. I booked a good full-day tour through GetYourGuide, which was the perfect way to see the highlights comfortably and safely.

Highlights

  • Food: Ethiopian cuisine is interesting and unique. I tried the best-rated fine dining restaurant in the city. My partner and I were the only customers there that evening, which was a bit unusual. The experience was still quite far from what I consider typical fine dining, but it was worth trying.
  • Cultural Show: I enjoyed a traditional dance performance put on for tourists — colorful, energetic, and entertaining.
  • Massage: I had what must be the hardest massage of my life from a very strong local woman. It was intense but definitely memorable!

While driving through a busy local market as a passenger, I tried to take a photo and received a middle finger from a local — likely a sign of frustration due to the economic situation and seeing tourists.

Final Thoughts

Addis Ababa is a city of contrasts: chaotic and challenging on one side, but rich in culture, food, and real-life experiences on the other. It’s not a classic holiday destination, but it’s very rewarding for travelers who want to see something different and genuine.

Would I recommend Addis Ababa? Yes — if you’re an adventurous traveler or collecting countries in Africa. It’s best visited as a short stop (1-2 days is enough). Use a good guide, keep an open mind, and embrace the raw African capital energy. The food, dances, and strong character of the city make it an interesting experience.
