East Timor – Dili, May 2025
Quick Description:
East Timor is one of the youngest countries in the world and still very much off the beaten path. A raw, authentic mix of beautiful nature, Portuguese influence, and strong Catholic culture. It feels wild, untouched, and very different from the rest of Southeast Asia.
Highlights:
• Stunning empty beaches with crystal clear water
• Extremely friendly and welcoming local people
• Beautiful mountains and coffee plantations in the interior
• Portuguese colonial architecture mixed with Asian and Pacific culture
• Very cheap compared to neighboring countries
Practical Info: I arrived by plane from Bali. Immigration was straightforward and the people at the airport were surprisingly welcoming. English is not widely spoken, but many people speak Portuguese or Indonesian. Having some cash (USD) is important as card payments are not always accepted.
What I Did: Spent most of my time in and around Dili. The city itself is quite basic, but the nature around it is impressive. I visited some beautiful beaches just outside the city — almost no tourists, just locals and perfect water.
The highlight was a trip into the mountains where I saw traditional villages and incredible landscapes. The contrast between the hot coast and the cool, green mountains is striking.
My Impression: East Timor is not for everyone. Infrastructure is still very basic and it’s not a comfortable, polished destination. But if you’re looking for an authentic, adventurous experience in a country very few people visit, it’s something special.
It felt like traveling back in time compared to Bali or Thailand. Rough around the edges, but very real.
